Canadian TV Network Reports that Probiotics Might Ease Some Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
A News story from CTV on a Canadian Research Study reported that a daily dosage of a probiotic supplement each day has been seen to alleviate symptoms of anxiety in study subjects who suffer from CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). This research came out of a Toronto university research team led by A. Venket Rao, based on a two month long study which showed a sizeable decrease in the subject’s symptoms of anxiety.
First of all, for those who are not usually concerned with natural health products, What is a probiotic? Basically a probiotic is a natural health product that has living – for example Bifidobacteria or lactobacillus. R Garden’s Salivarius is one such supplement that supports the good bacteria living in each of us. This gut bacteria , supports our immune system and helps to fight off damaging bacteria.
But what the U of T. team of researchers were most delighted to find was that, this 2 month run of regular probiotics supplementation also demonstrated positive results in handling disorders such as depression & anxiety. Unlike medicines, which can trigger many undesirable side effects, probiotics offer an easy and safe way to manage these issues. They have published their report in the journal BioMed Central.
Their research was conducted on people suffering from Chronic fatigue syndrome which shows other signs like persistent fatigue and for a large group – sleep disturbances, depression & anxiety.
Likely what led them to examine probiotics originally was that subjects with CFS are also often affected with digestive problems often connected with the lowered presence of healthy bacteria in the body. Natural health advocates have used probotics to aid digestion for a long time. Because the beneficial bacteria present in the probiotic supplements is able to help the body crowd out the bad bacteria in the system and this bad bacteria has already been connected with an increase in depression and other mood problems, the researchers think that bacteria levels may influence our behavior.
The group given probiotics regularly demonstrated greater levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria and this correlated with a significant reduction in anxiety feelings in the group. They also showed digestive improvements such as a decrease in gas inflammation and bloating.
“The findings are huge,” said study co-author Alison C. Bested, who continued state that the research patients felt calmer and were better able to deal with their illness, slept better and experienced fewer symptoms of anxiety.
